I reviewed the songs prior to knowing who did them. It was quite a ride.
1. Bruised - Jack's Mannequin
Very good, I like it a lot. While his vocals are a bit obnoxious, I'm digging this. It's a good melody. I like the use of the drum machine and/or synthesizer. "Sometimes perfection can be perfect hell.... Every inch of me is bruised" Wow, I'm kind of surprised by the depth of the lyrics here. It looks like punk has also grown up. "I'll lace my chucks, I'll walk the aisle" that's fucking sweet. It reminds me of my wedding...
2. Don't Be So Hard - The Audition
I don't care for the dudes voice in the slightest. I hate that nasally crap. Besides that, I don't mind it.
3. Baby Come On - +44
3. Baby Come On - +44
This has to be Blink 182. I'm at least certain it's Mark Hoppus singing. They were my favorite band for a very long time. I like this one; it's reminiscent for me.
4. Sun - Daphne Loves Derby
Oh god this guy is awfully breathy. Sounds like he's about to run out of air! All in all, it's not that bad. Kind of sounds like Good Charlotte or something. He's getting nasally now. That's one thing I never liked about punk, the nasally singing. Nice break down. I prefer the breathy singing over the nasally kind.
5. Woe - Say Anything
5. Woe - Say Anything
I like this... They sound very familiar. Dead Milkmen perhaps??? Or maybe Home Grown. "She took pity on me, horizontally, but most likely because of my band." That made me laugh. Very good. I definitely like this one a lot. "United States of Whoa." LOL! Really, REALLY like this one.
6. Apology - Alesana
6. Apology - Alesana
Yikes. I don't like songs that begin with the words "sweat" or "lust." I do like the screaming in the background though. Again with the nasally. I don't know how much I'm going to enjoy this cd if they all insist on singing through their noses.
7. Jasey Rae - All Time Low
7. Jasey Rae - All Time Low
Starts off pretty! I kind of like it. I really like the lyrics but his voice just ruins it all for me.
8. Red Light Pledge - Silverstein
8. Red Light Pledge - Silverstein
This one starts off pretty too... catchy... like the harmonizing of the guitars. I'm enjoying their vocals so far. I think I like this one the best! It's very good.
9. Night Drive - The All-American Rejects
9. Night Drive - The All-American Rejects
Hmm I think I like this one too. Actually, I really like it. The guitars remind me of the saunter of a cowboy. Freakin sweet. "You wrecked my life, now I'm gonna have to drive all night" I like that lyric. When I'm really upset I like driving. Oooh the piano! This is great! What good use of the instrument, it sounds fabulous with the guitar. What a melody! I can't tell which one is my favorite now. At least there are some that suck so that balances it out.
10. Three Cheers For Five Years - Mayday Parade
10. Three Cheers For Five Years - Mayday Parade
Oh SICK. SICK. HIS VOICE IS MAKING MY GAG REFLEX GO CRAZY! Even the harmonizing isn't helping because I can still hear that douche's voice! It sounds like they both have a freaking lisp! Yeah no. They're trying to make it sound pretty but it's not working. They're trying to incorporate the piano but it stinks. His vocals overpower all of the instruments. And here he goes with that breathy crap. These guys suck.
11. Staplegunned - The Spill Canvas
11. Staplegunned - The Spill Canvas
At first listen, this dude sounds like the guy from Matchbox 20. Now that he continues to what he thinks is sing he's not even close. I hate his voice. I don't think I can listen to the entire thing. I hate it when they change the pronunciation of words so drastically that you don't even know what they were trying to say. Ugh, this is sick.
12. Who I Am Hates Who I've Been - Relient K
12. Who I Am Hates Who I've Been - Relient K
This one starts off good just like the rest but who knows what I can expect. Proverbial sunrise huh? Nice lyric. Aaah there's that classic nasal I was waiting for. I love how they go in and out of it and then throw in the breathy stuff here and there. Punk bands are hilarious. I like the lyrics though.
13. Welcome To 1984 - Anti-Flag
13. Welcome To 1984 - Anti-Flag
This undoubtedly sounds like Against Me! one of my favorite more recent punk-ish bands. Their first album is fantastic, I highly recommend it. This is an awesome song. I like this one particularly because of the 1984 part. I was born that year. : ) I really like politically motivated songs. The band itself is really all about political stuff but it's weird, you would think that they dress like anarchists but they don't. I remember Saira got all mad and said they looked like jocks. They did but they're still awesome.
14. Only Song, The - Sherwood
14. Only Song, The - Sherwood
This almost sounds like an Alkaline Trio song but it's not. Ick his voice is gross. It's too high pitched for my taste.
15. Echoes - Set Your Goals
15. Echoes - Set Your Goals
Oooh I like this one a lot already. I hope the dudes voice doesn't ruin it for me... ok I don't like his voice but I don't want to stop listening to it because I don't have as much a distaste for his voice as I do for most of the others. I can see myself listening to this band as a guilty pleasure type deal. (keep your close on type deal) I appreciate their attempt at harmonizing although I feel like their timing is way off. "cross your heart, it's yours to keep" that's cute. Oooh I do like the da da da's that they're doing simultaneously. It reminds me of being in kindergarten and singing the Row Row Row Your Boat song like that. I'm glad they ended with that song, the cd closed on a high note.
